**ZHAW-Forschende entwickeln mit der Schweizer Firma Osmotex AG eine selbstdesinfizierende Maske, die Viren auf Knopfdruck inaktiviert. Der Prototyp dieser weltweit einzigartigen Maske aus elektrochemischen Textilien zeigt eine antivirale Wirkung von über 99 Prozent. Weitere Anwendungen wie sterilisierbare Sitzbezüge werden geprüft.**

Ob aus Zellulose oder Stoff: Schutzmasken sind aus unserem Alltag nicht mehr wegzudenken. Ihre  
Schutzwirkung basiert bei den heutigen Modellen auf der Filterung der Aerosole oder zusätzlich auf der  
passiven Inaktivierung der Viren mittels geladener Oberflächen, zum Beispiel durch Silberkationen.  
Damit die Masken zuverlässig schützen, müssen sie richtig getragen und rechtzeitig ersetzt oder  
fachgerecht gewaschen werden. Eine Schutzmaske, die sich jederzeit auf Knopfdruck sterilisieren  
lässt, hätte entscheidende Vorteile. Hier setzten die ZHAW und die Firma [Osmotex ](https://osmotex.ch/)aus Thalwil an: Mit  
einer neuartigen elektrochemischen Technologie können Viren und andere Krankheitserreger nicht nur  
passiv, sondern zusätzlich auch aktiv unschädlich gemacht werden. Aktuell wird ein Prototyp dieser  
Maske von drei Forschungsgruppen des [ZHAW-Instituts für Chemie und Biotechnologie](https://www.zhaw.ch/de/lsfm/institute-zentren/icbt/) in Wädenswil  
optimiert. Die Forschenden konnten nachweisen, dass die neuartige Maske sicher und gesundheitlich  
unbedenklich ist. Sie soll spätestens im Frühling 2021 marktreif sein.

#### Erste Maske mit elektrochemischer Technologie

Laut Osmotex-Cheftechnologe Trond Heldal sind die bisherigen Resultate vielversprechend. «Unsere  
Sterilizer Mask wäre die erste Maske weltweit, die sich elektrochemisch sterilisieren lässt – und zwar  
rasch und zuverlässig. Das entsprechende Verfahren haben wir bereits patentieren lassen», erklärt  
Heldal. «Dank dem wissenschaftlichen Knowhow der ZHAW konnten wir die Maske optimieren und  
innert kurzer Zeit zur Marktreife bringen.» Das gemeinsam von ZHAW-Chemiker [Chahan Yeretzian](https://www.zhaw.ch/de/ueber-uns/person/yere/) und  
Osmotex initiierte Projekt wird von der Förderagentur des Bundes [Innosuisse ](https://www.innosuisse.ch/inno/de/home.html)mit 902'000 Franken  
unterstützt und verfügt über ein Budget von 1.7 Millionen Franken. Während sich Chahan Yeretzians  
Team der Sicherheit der Maske widmet, ist das Team von ZHAW-Mikrobiologe [Martin Sievers](https://www.zhaw.ch/de/ueber-uns/person/sima/) für die  
Effizienz und jenes von ZHAW-Chemiker [Christian Adlhart](https://www.zhaw.ch/de/ueber-uns/person/adas/) für das Material zuständig. «Nachdem wir  
die Wirksamkeit der elektrochemischen Technologie mit einer Studie im Sommer 2020 dokumentiert  
haben, arbeiten wir nun daran, diese Technologie für sterile Schutzmasken zu optimieren und  
alltagstauglich zu machen», so Yeretzian.

#### Sterilisierung auf Knopfdruck

Die neuartige Maske besteht aus einem mehrlagigen Spezialstoff sowie Elektroden und einer  
Spannungsquelle. Zwischen zwei leitenden Schichten liegt eine isolierende Membran. Dank einer  
integrierten und über einen USB-Anschluss aufladbaren Batterie wird auf Knopfdruck eine elektrische  
Spannung von wenigen Volt angelegt. Diese erzeugt reaktive Sauerstoffmoleküle, die Viren und auch  
Bakterien zuverlässig inaktivieren. Auf diese Weise lässt sich die Oberfläche der Maske in wenigen  
Minuten – und sogar während des Tragens – sterilisieren. Die angelegte Spannung und die erzeugten  
reaktiven Sauerstoffmoleküle sind dabei minimal und für Menschen absolut unbedenklich.

Welche reaktiven Sauerstoffmoleküle produziert werden und wie effizient diese die Krankheitserreger inaktivieren, hängt von der eingesetzten Spannung und von den verwendeten Materialien ab. Im Labor suchen die ZHAW-Forschenden aktuell nach der optimalen Mischung. «Je nach Spannung und Aufbau des Textils erreichen wir eine Vireninaktivierung von über 99 Prozent, und zwar unter weit höheren Anforderungen und in kürzerer Zeit als für antivirale Textilien empfohlen», so ZHAW-Projektleiter [Sebastian Opitz](https://www.zhaw.ch/de/ueber-uns/person/opit/). Die Sterilisierungseffizienz könnte also je nach Einsatzbereich spezifisch angepasst werden.

#### Potenzial für weitere Anwendungen

Das grosse Potenzial des elektrochemischen Verfahrens von Osmotex zeigte sich schon früher bei  
der Entwicklung von «intelligenten» Sporttextilien, die den Schweiss aktiv nach aussen  
transportieren. Im Rahmen des Innosuisse-Projekts wollen Osmotex und die ZHAW-Forschenden  
diese Technologie deshalb auch auf weitere Anwendungen ausdehnen, so etwa auf Sitzbezüge und  
andere Textilien im öffentlichen Bereich. Die Liste der potenziellen Anwendungsbereiche ist lang:  
Spitäler, Rettungsteams, Hotels, öffentliche Verkehrsmittel, Büros oder Arbeitsplätze. So könnten  
teure sowie potenziell gefährliche chemische Stoffe oder UV-Systeme ersetzt werden. «Die  
elektrochemische Sterilisation könnte sogar eine Antwort auf die wachsende Problematik  
multiresistenter Krankenhauskeime sein», sagt Chahan Yeretzian. Denkbar sind aber auch ganz  
alltägliche Anwendungen. Beispielsweise könnte eine Handtasche der einfachen Sterilisierung von  
Gegenständen wie Schlüssel, Handy oder Münzen dienen.

#### Über uns

Die Handelskammer und Arbeitgebervereinigung Winterthur HAW ist 1992 aus der Fusion der Kaufmännischen Gesellschaft Handelskammer Winterthur und dem Arbeitgeberverband Winterthur entstanden. Ihre Wurzeln gehen bis ins Jahr 1801 zurück. Die HAW prägte die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung der Stadt Winterthur und trägt bis heute dazu bei, dass Winterthur ein Wirtschaftsstandort mit gut ausgebauter Infrastruktur ist.
