**Wasserstoff, das häufigste Element im Universum, bietet viele Vorteile für die klimaneutrale Energieversorgung. Es kann als Brennstoff, Energiespeicher oder zur Stromerzeugung verwendet werden. Seine Nutzung verursacht keine Treibhausgasemissionen. Doch die Herstellung und der Transport sind mit Herausforderungen verbunden. Der Weg zu einer Wasserstoffwirtschaft führt über andere erneuerbare Gase und erfordert einen iterativen Aufbau von Infrastruktur und Märkten. Dabei müssen bestehende Infrastrukturen wie das Gasnetz genutzt werden.**

**Von Grau zu Grün – die Transformation der Wasserstoffproduktion und -nachfrage**

Die weltweite Wasserstoffproduktion basiert heute fast ausschliesslich auf fossilen Brennstoffen, was hohe Emissionen verursacht. Ausserdem wird Wasserstoff fast nur als industrieller Grundstoff eingesetzt. Soll er künftig als Energieträger eingesetzt werden, muss die Produktion von klimaneutralem Wasserstoff massiv ausgebaut werden. Dafür braucht es viel günstigen erneuerbaren Strom. In der Schweiz ist eine eigene Produktion, insbesondere im grösseren Ausmass, aus heutiger Sicht nicht wirtschaftlich möglich. Die Herstellung wird also künftig eher in sonnenreichen Ländern erfolgen, zum Beispiel im Nahen und Mittleren Osten.

 

**Ein Konsum, der steigen und sich diversifizieren wird**

Die Nachfrage nach Wasserstoff und erneuerbaren Gasen dürfte sich bis 2050 vervielfachen. Wasserstoff kann fossile Brennstoffe in der Industrie, Stromspeicherung und im Transport ersetzen. Die Nutzung anderer erneuerbarer Gase, wie Biomethan und synthetische Kraftstoffe, erweitert den Fächer der Energiespeicher und erhöht die Versorgungssicherheit. Vor allem ermöglichen aber andere erneuerbare Gase die Nutzung bestehender Infrastrukturen.

 

**Die Europäische Union setzt auf Wasserstoff**

Die EU strebt an, bis 2050 den Anteil von Wasserstoff am Energieverbrauch von praktisch 0 auf 20 Prozent zu erhöhen. Dies erfordert eine klimaneutrale Wasserstoffproduktion von 20 Millionen Tonnen bis 2030 – etwa das Zwanzigfache des heutigen Schweizer Gasverbrauchs. Die EU-Strategie umfasst Investitionen, Förderung der Nachfrage und Infrastrukturentwicklung. Ein europäisches Wasserstofftransportnetz soll bis 2040 entstehen, wobei die Schweiz beteiligt sein könnte.

 

**Die Schweiz kann und muss aufholen**

Die Schweiz strebt Klimaneutralität bis 2050 an, wobei Wasserstoff in der aktuellen Planung eine marginale Rolle spielt. Prognosen variieren, aber eine signifikante Nutzung von Wasserstoff ist sehr wahrscheinlich. Die Schweiz muss ihre Wasserstoffstrategie schnell zu Boden bringen und an der europäischen Entwicklung dranbleiben.

 

**Forderungen der Wirtschaft**

Kurzfristig muss die Wasserstoffstrategie klar definierte Ziele setzen und die Schweiz an den European Hydrogen Backbone anschliessen. Regulatorische Standards und Herkunftsnachweise für erneuerbare Gase sind notwendig, ebenso wie Investitionsanreize für die Gasnetzinfrastruktur. Mittel- bis langfristig sind internationale Beschaffungsvereinbarungen und eine Marktordnung für den Gasbereich erforderlich. Um den Kohlenstoffkreislauf langfristig zu schliessen, muss ausserdem die Infrastruktur für die industrielle Nutzung und den CO2-Abtransport mitgedacht und bereitgestellt werden.

 

**Fazit**

Sicher, sauber, günstig – so muss die Energieversorgung der Zukunft sein. Energie in Molekülform, insbesondere Wasserstoff oder andere erneuerbare Gase, werden dabei eine wichtige Rolle spielen – dort wo die Elektrifizierung technisch oder ökonomisch an Grenzen stösst. Politisch fristen diese alternativen Energieträger noch ein Nischendasein. Ihre Marktdurchdringung muss jedoch in den nächsten Jahren umsichtig begleitet und ermöglicht werden.

#### Über uns

Die Handelskammer und Arbeitgebervereinigung Winterthur HAW ist 1992 aus der Fusion der Kaufmännischen Gesellschaft Handelskammer Winterthur und dem Arbeitgeberverband Winterthur entstanden. Ihre Wurzeln gehen bis ins Jahr 1801 zurück. Die HAW prägte die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung der Stadt Winterthur und trägt bis heute dazu bei, dass Winterthur ein Wirtschaftsstandort mit gut ausgebauter Infrastruktur ist.
