Im Rahmen der Cluster-Initiative Smart Machines vergibt die HAW zusammen mit der Johann Jacob Rieter Stiftung seit 2021 einen mit CHF 10'000 dotierten Preis für die beste studentische Arbeit. Die Preisverleihung 2024 fand am 5. November im Rahmen der traditionellen Herbstversammlung der HAW vor 80 Mitgliedern und Gästen statt. Die Jury hatte die Auswahl aus 4 qualitativ hochstehenden Arbeiten, die zusammen mit Industriepartnern an der ZHAW School of Engineering eingereicht wurden.

Die Cluster-Initiative, wurde auf Initiative der HAW, House of Winterthur und der Technopark Winterthur AG vor mehr als 5 Jahren ins Leben gerufen wurde. Die Initiative soll die Innovationstätigkeit hinsichtlich Smart Machines, Health und Energy in der Region durch aktiven Wissens- und Erfahrungsaustausch und zielgerichtete F&E-Projekte stärken, damit die Unternehmen Werte schaffen und Arbeitsplätze und damit den Wohlstand in der Region sichern.

Mit dem von der Johann Jacob Rieter-Stiftung und der HAW gespendeten Preis sollen hervorragende Arbeiten im Bereich Smart Machines ausgezeichnet werden. Bei der Beurteilung der Arbeiten soll insbesondere der Aspekt der technischen und ökonomischen Relevanz im Sinne der Umsetzbarkeit berücksichtigt werden. Die Jury, bestehend aus den Experten Peter Anderegg, David Gehring, Luzi Valär und Michael Wüthrich hat auch dieses Jahr wieder sehr gute Arbeiten beurteilen dürfen.

**Fabian Ulrich und Tobias Wehrli** reichten die Bachelorarbeit in Computerwissenschaften an der ZHAW bei Prof. Dr. Bogojeska ein unter dem Titel: End-to-End Deep Reinforcement Learning for Autonomous Racing Dynamics. Diese Arbeit untersucht die Integration von Deep Reinforcement Learning mit Proximal Policy Optimization und einem Detektor in ein einheitliches End-to-End-System. Der Objektdetektor verarbeitet Eingabebilder und Tiefendaten, um die Positionen von streckenbegrenzenden Objekten zu extrahieren. Der Agent schloss das Beschleunigungsrennen erfolgreich ab, ohne zu kollidieren, und zeigte dabei eine Leistung, die mit der menschlichen Leistung vergleichbar ist. **Pascal Eberhard und Nicola Kreis** entwickelten ein iPhone-basiertes Diagnostik Modell zur Früherkennung von Alzheimer und reichten die Arbeit bei Tobias Welti, ZHAW, Schwerpunktleiter System on Chip Design, Edge-AI und Embedded Processing und Dr. Martin Loeser, ZHAW, Studiengangleiter Elektrotechnik ein. Es wurde das Potenzial einer KI-basierten iOS-App eruiert. Die App verfügt über eine Analyse des Gesichtsausdrucks in Echtzeit sowie eine Klangklassifizierung der aufgezeichneten Audiodaten mithilfe von KI. Vordergründig ausserhalb von Smart Machines kann die Technologie durchaus auch in der Maschinenindustrie eingesetzt werden. **Sandro Allenbach und Sven Ryser** haben in Ihrer Systemtechnikarbeit bei Michael Wüthrich und Gabriel Schneider von der ZHAW SoE eine Escaperoombox für einen Industriepartner entwickelt und moderne Elektronik mit fortschrittlicher Software kombiniert. Es wurde die Konnektivität zum Smartphone, das Auslesen der Inertialmesseinheit, die Steuerung über ein Webinterface und die Ueberwachung verschiedenster Sensoren sowie die Kommunikation sichergestellt. Die Arbeit ist nicht direkt eine industrielle Anwendung, doch werden genau diejenigen Technologien eingesetzt, die Maschinen smart machen, weshalb sie ein hervorragendes Beispiel für die Implementierung von Smart Machine Technologien ist. **Valerio Serafini und Damian Roggensinger**, Absolventen BSc Elektrotechnik, bei Dominiqe Cachin, ZHAW SoE, erarbeiteten eine Machbarkeitsstudie zur Low Energy Strommessung mit Bluetooth-Datenübertragung für einen Industriepartner. Die Arbeit zeigt, wie zentrale Konzepte von Industrie 4.0, wie IoT, Konnektivität, Sensorik und Prozessüberwachung, erfolgreich angewendet werden können und stellt auch einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Weiterentwicklung von Sicherheitsfragen dar. Die Arbeit hat eine erhebliche technologische und ökonomische Bedeutung für die Sicherheit einer Industrie, die über den Schweizer Raum hinausgeht. (Video)

Die Jury hat sich eingehend mit allen Arbeiten, der Empfehlungen der Betreuer und auch den erhaltenen Kurzvideos auseinandergesetzt und war beeindruckt von der Qualität der Arbeiten. Auch dieses Jahr unterliegt eine der Arbeiten besonderen Vertraulichkeitsbestimmungen: Dies ein Beleg für die Qualität und den praktischen Nutzen für den Auftraggeber. Den ansässigen Unternehmen kann deshalb empfohlen werden, aktiv den Dialog mit den Hochschulen, am Platz namentlich mit der ZHAW, zu suchen. 

Als Siegerarbeit wurde die Arbeit von Valerio Serafini und Damian Roggensinger ausgezeichnet. Die HAW und die JJR-Stiftung gratuliert den Preisträgern und dankt allen Teilnehmenden, der Jury, den Praxispartnern und den Dozenten der Hochschule für die aktive Beteiligung.

#### Über uns

Die Handelskammer und Arbeitgebervereinigung Winterthur HAW ist 1992 aus der Fusion der Kaufmännischen Gesellschaft Handelskammer Winterthur und dem Arbeitgeberverband Winterthur entstanden. Ihre Wurzeln gehen bis ins Jahr 1801 zurück. Die HAW prägte die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung der Stadt Winterthur und trägt bis heute dazu bei, dass Winterthur ein Wirtschaftsstandort mit gut ausgebauter Infrastruktur ist.
